Up for auction is an original old 19th century cancelled Wells Fargo check from the San Francisco, California branch.  It's dated 1882 and signed by the Managing Director of the Sweetwater and Treasure Hill Mining Company ...

The Bank of California (in San Francisco) financed a number of mining operations of the Comstock Lode, and repossessed some mines when their owners defaulted, and ultimately generated enormous profits as a result.
