    Katharine Cornell was an American stage actress, writer theatre owner and producer. She
    is regarded as one of the greatest stage actresses of the 20th century. Her most famous role
    was as English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning in the 1931 Broadway production of
    The
    Barretts of Wimpole Street
    . Won a Tony Award playing Cleopatra in
    Antony and Cleopatra
    (1947). Appeared in only one film,
    Stage Door Canteen
    (1943), in which she played herself.
    She and her husband, director Guthrie McClintic, formed a production company that brought
    popular successes to such authors as George Bernard Shaw and William Shakespeare.
