Ida St Leon born 1894 died 1961 was a member of the famous circus acrobatic st Leon family that took part in the Polly of the Circus play on Broadway in 1907. Her older sister was a star of the play, Elsie St Leon. The family included their mother, also Ida St. Leon, her father Alfred St. Leon, Aloisie St. Leon, George St. Leon and herself (age about 13). The play lasted Dec 23, 1907 - May 1908. As you will see below she became "Polly" later about 1917.
The play by Margaret Mayo premiered on Broadway at the Liberty Theatre on December 23, 1907, and ran for 160 performances. Mabel Taliaferro played the titular role and Herbert Ayling, Joseph Brennan, James Cherry, Mattie Ferguson, Jack B. Hollis, Elsie St. Leon and Malcolm Williams were also in the cast.
There was a 1903 documentary on the family of St Leon whose tagline was "Here is a moving picture of the world's most wonderful Acrobats, the St. Leons. They are the pride of Paris, France, and receive the approbation of all wherever they appear. Not alone do they show phenomenal strength, but their lofty tumbling and physical feats are marvelous to behold." Actually they started out in Australia, moving to Califonia. When the last of the St Leon family retired from circus in the 1960s, five generations of the family had served the world of spangles and sawdust in both Australia and the United States - and had appeared in vaudeville, theatre and film.
The family of performers goes well back into the 19th century in Australia. In 1899, Alfred St Leon and his family reached the United States and began to rise swiftly in American circusdom. After the play closed down, each summer, during the years 1908-13, Alfreds children, Elsie and George, were a featured riding act at the outdoor circus at Luna Park, Coney Island, a popular pleasure resort and amusement park for New Yorkers. When not at Coney Island, the family performed the live, on-stage circus scenes in Polly of the Circus, a popular production toured throughout the United States and Canada. Alfreds daughter, Ida, eventually graduated to the speaking role of Polly and launched her theatrical career. In 1917, Ida was voted one of Americas ten most popular actresses. It is Ida who is provided here as a signed autograph probably dated from this later period in 1917 rather than the play of 10 years erlier when she would have been only a teenager. Afterall she calls herself "Poly" in this piece.
